The Leo Apostel Center in collaboration with the Doctoral Programme of the VUB invites everyone to the 44th of its interdisciplinary seminars in the Foundations series. In this series CLEA invites scholars that are actively engaged in the research on the foundations of a particular discipline. Their lectures will always be directed to an interdisciplinary audience, and the discussions aim at confronting the foundations of the different disciplines. TOWARDS THE BIOPHYSICS OF CELL INTELLIGENCE ******************************************* by Prof. Dr. Jack Tuszynski *************************** (Department of Physics, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada) Friday, December 10, 1999 at 5 p.m. in room 5/ C401(building C) Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Campus Oefenplein About the lecture ***************** In this talk he will try to make a link between cell structure and function discussing the various subcellular components and their assemblies. Microtubules, actin filaments and motor proteins will be discussed in this context along with their physical properties, either measured or predicted from simulations. The focus of his attention will be the centriole whose importance has been recently emphasized by G. Albrecht-Buehler. It will be his goal to support Albrecht-Buehler's observations with computer models and their results. About the speaker ***************** Jack Tuszynski is Professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. His reasearch include: Biophysics, Pharmacokinetics, Condensed Matter Physics, Mathematical and Nonlinear Physics, Bio-Medical Physics, Bio-Electronics. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Biological Physics He is also in the organizing committee of the upcoming conference: Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry of Motor Proteins in August 27 - September 1, 2000 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. For more about him see : http://fermi.phys.ualberta.ca/~jtus/ The presentation with questions will last about an hour. Afterwards, an hour or more is reserved for an in-depth, group discussion of the topic. More info at the CLEA office: phone 02-644 26 77 or via the Web-page: http://pcp.vub.ac.be/CLEA/
