The Center Leo Apostel in collaboration with the Doctoral Programme of the VUB and this time also in collaboration with UCOS, invites everybody to the 16th of its interdisciplinary seminars in the series Foundations. In this series CLEA invites scholars that are actively engaged in the research on the foundations of a particular discipline. Their lectures will always be directed to an interdisciplinary audience, and the discussions aim at confronting the foundations of the different discipline. Managing Conflicts, Reconciling (human) Interests: ************************************************** a Must for Our Future? ********************* by Louis Van Geyt ************** (former president of CP-Belgium; representative of UCOS) (the lecture will be held in Dutch, but the discussion is open to English or French) Thursday, 27 Februari 1997 at 5 p.m. in auditorium L210 (Building L) Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Campus Oefenplein. About the lecture: ------------------ Is it possible to avoid that the globalisation of economy, coinciding with the contemporary scientific-technological mutations and the elimination of the non-capitalistic world system (1917-1991), will lead to the (predictable) destruction of mankind? The speaker believes this can be avoided, on the condition that lessons are drawn from previous great conflicts that have occurred since the emergence of the labour- and liberty-movements, as well as from the ways in which these were managed (rather than eliminated). A specific reading of social capitalism of the years around 1900, of the New Deal and the Welfare State, of the East- and South-politics of Brandt and Harmel, and of the South-African miracle can be of major importance -to effectively question the lethal pensee unique -to successfully strive for a future of mankind, from the standpoint of a re-motivated civil society. About the speaker: ------------------- Louis Van Geyt is the former president of the Communist Party of Belgium. He was a member of parliament until 1981. As an actor within the social field, he was actively involved in the international affairs and in societal games of power before and after the Wende. Presently he is coordinator of the Belgian Alert Committee for the European Councils. He represents UCOS (Universitary Council for Development) at the NCOS (National Council on Development), and at the two main structures of the labour movement in Flanders that are responsible for programming the Labour Campaign of the NCOS. The presentation with questions will last about an hour. Afterwards, an hour or more is reserved for an in-depth, group discussion of the topic.
