ANNOTATION: Regarding "conformity pressure"
Regarding the idea that "a group of carriers with
different memes will tend towards homogeneization", I would
suggest a reading of Denzau & North (1994) "Shared Mental Models:
ideologies and Institutions" (in Kyklos, Vol 47, 1), and Hahn, F.
(1987) "Information, Dynamics, and Equilibrium" (in the Scottish
Journal of Political Economy, Vol 34).
Their argument is that environmental "feedback from [...]
choices is not sufficient to lead to convergence of competing
interpretations of reality. In consequence, as Hahn has pointed
out, 'there is a continuum of theories that agents can hold and
act on without ever encountering events which will lead them to
change their theories'" (Denzau & North, 1994:4).
'Conformity pressure' would, in this reading be a less
powerful mechanism than suggested in this document. As an
alternative we may suggest a certain 'adaptive action' on the
part of individuals, with a less 'passive' role in the selection
of memes.
