ANNOTATION: Meme's and the survival of the imagined self.
In your introduction to the concept of 'memes' you used the example of passing on survival information. The motivation for this is the fear of death. Today we take on a whole range of memes to survive. We learn computer skills, go to college etc to provide a skill base to deal with a competitive environment.
Outside of our physical needs we also develop a range of memes that make us feel secure emotionally and psychologically. Nothing new there, but what is amazing is the lengths we go to protect these. Jonestown and Rwanda come to mind. We form clubs, alliances interest groups and adopt various memes to deal with fears real and imagined. The fear of having nothing to do, the fear that everything you've done has ammounted to nothing, the fear of not being loved, the fear of being nothing. That is a memeless threshold and who wants that? Put your hand down Buddha.
