ANNOTATION: Dawkins' original definition of meme
Glenn Grant's definition of a 'meme' actually refers
to what Dawkins' has subsequently termed 'mind-viruses'.
The original definition of a meme was simply as the
replicative entity or unit of selection in cultural evolution.
This would include both adaptive and unadaptive ideas, or
cultural practices.
Sorry if this sounds a pedantic criticism, but I think that
terminology is required. Not all memes are mind-viruses.
I've been trying to get some articles using the memetic
concept published in various journals in the social sciences
sphere, and I find referees are very particular about terminology.
