ANNOTATION:
21st Century animism

I consider myself to be an animist, with a sprinkling of pantheism but within a modern setting - what I have termed the Obi-Wan school of druidry. I view myself, genericaly, as a 'Gaian'. However, I am painfully aware that Gaia is simply a 'spirit of place' with little relevance to the vastness of the universe, likewise our reverence for the moon and its triple phase symbology are entirely a product of time and place with no frame of reference for activity that is not carried out on earth. Our planet is not a closed system, but the spiritual perspective of humanity generally treats it as though it were.

How to develop spiritual tools to handle the vastness of time and space, that is the question. In ancient times, Earth was All, there was there was no requirement to 'communicate' with symbols that were not of that time and place, modern paganism has sought to recreate the spirits of time and place that were of relevance to our ancestors, but they have little relevance for us, and will have even less to our descendants. That is what drew me to animism in the first place, I felt no connection to the celtic, or egyptian, or north american tribal mythos of our fore-fathers, none of them struck a chord. I wanted something that showed me, in graphic detail the interconnectedness of every planet, every atom, every chemical reaction - from those inside the tiniest of bacteria to those within the heart of the mightiest supanova. I needed to see the lines of energy stretching off into the distance, everything interconnected, everything relevant, everything governed by the simplest of stellar mechanics, everything subject to the laws of cause and effect.

However, I also wanted something that showed the purposiveness of creation, I can see the argument for evolution and natural selection - and agree with most of them - but I see a path that encompasses both options. A sort of planned evolution , so that puts me off 'scientific pantheism' because, all else aside - I actually 'like' the spiritual dimensions of my psyche. I believe that I have now found a path, a mythos, that speaks to me on a critical level, that fills a spiritual need in me. I use the term mythos in a favourable sense, a term to denote a way of explaining my place in the universe, of understanding my place in the greater scheme of things. I am looking to the future, not trying to recapture the past.

Any who care to share that path are free to contact me for further discussions.
