ANNOTATION:
Definition of integration

A related but somewhat different definition of INTEGRATION is given in Kolasa and Pickett 1989 (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 86: 8837-8841): INTEGRATION IS AN AGGREGATE INDEX OF BOTH COORDINATION AND RATE OF CONFIGURATIONAL CHANGE WITHIN THE MINIMUM INTERACTIVE STRUCTURE.

The definition above is more specific of what it means to be unified: it demands that the components show a coordinated behavior (whether by a centralized control or not) and should not be easily changing metasystems (higher level entity) membership.
