ANNOTATION: Philosophical Difference
It may, I admit, eventually be possible to "download" the human mind into a computer...but this would be a copy, not a continuation of the original. The best way to blend our desire for immortality with the possibilities of our science is to remove the human CNS and implant it into a nonbiological corpus which would simultaneously maintain the optimal function of the brain (and if we are anything, we ARE our brains), while allowing us to continue to manipulate the world as we have been adapted to do already...with hands and feet and facial expressions...rather than some science fiction dream of idealized nonphysical existence. Without the risks of infection or most physical ailments, without the risks of physical damage, and without the other weaknesses of the biological body we now have, we can still function as INDIVIDUALS with a continuing memory and consciousness. Frankly, I don't want to be a drone in the hive, I don't WANT to share my consciousness...I want to keep being ME forever, and I'm going to do everything in my power to make such claims to a cybernetic future as here envisioned irrelevant, by instituting protocols that will allow us to do just that.
