Absolute must-reads on cybernetic immortality: _Mind Age_ by Hans Moravec (esp. the last section), and _Permutation City_ by Greg Egan (haven't read all of it yet, it's an expansion of his story "Dust" in _Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine_). Don't knock the latter for being SF, it's hardcore stuff.
