ANNOTATION: Genetic Manipulation and The Breakdown of Values
This comment relates to the annotation: "Breakdown of Values", in particular the paragraph:
Many religious people see genetic manipulation of living organisms as evil, since it implies humans playing the role of God. .... The fact is that traditional religious teachings have nothing to say about the issue. None of the great prophets could have foreseen the discovery of DNA splicing.
There is in fact a verse in the Holy Koran of relevance. It follows in translation. Satan is declaring how he will lead mankind astray:
786
And most certainly I will lead them astray and excite in them vain desires, and bid them so that they shall slit the ears of the cattle, and most certainly I will bid them so that they shall alter* Allah's creation**, and whoever takes the Shaitan [Satan] for a guardian rather than Allah he indeed shall suffer a manifest loss. [Al-Koran 4:119]
* from the Arabic root gh-y-r meaning: change, alter, modify, vary, replace.
** from the Arabic root kh-l-q with meanings: nature, natural disposition, trait, characteristic, creature, created being.
Hence this verse refers to modification of the intrinsic nature of creatures.
