I found your site while doing some research for my graduation film which will be shot in Cambridge,April00.
Some of the discussions and contributions were quite inspiring for me, specially in regard to questions of
knowldge.
Not accedently though, my film is also called Principia! My script was inspired by a very short story
written by Sudanese Writer Bushra AL Fadil, which I read long time ago. The story is only three lines long
, and it goes like this:
A man (with his full name)was sitting under a "Doume" tree( a local tree in Sudan
with very solid hard fruits.) Three fruits fell over his head, leaving a big scar on his forehead.
He ate the fruits, and never dicovered the Law of Gravity!
My film Principia, however, is dealing with questions of knowledge. It tries, within the limitations
of the cinematic language off course, to cast doubts on the purpose of seeking knowldge itself and
whether it is ever possible to know! I guess my interrest in (and obssesion with) such questions
made me look at Bushra's short story from a different angle. Perhaps if I was a Marxist, as Bushra
himself, I would have realated it to a more immediate reading: The man is just hungry, for God's sake!
But as I just "say that" I find myself in the realm of ambiguities! Whose sake did you say?!
I hope some of PCW's visitors and contributors would be interrested in knowing about this project.
All suggestions and enquiries are wellcomed and I might even be able to send you a copy of the first
draft of the script.
ONE MORE THING! MY PRODUCER,CHRIS PETCHER, IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON RAISING FUNDS FOR
THE MAKING OF THIS FILM. ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS ON THESE WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED.
It is extemely hard to raise funds when you are making a film about knowing nothing!
